Period: February 2012 – end of the semester
Registration: By the end of January 2012
Lecturers: Associate Professor Kristina Westerberg (course coordinator), Professor Eva Magnusson, Professor Eva Sundin.

The course provides theoretical and practical knowledge to design and implement a qualitative research project. The course covers the different epistemological perspectives that underpin qualitative psychological research and using research perspectives such as implications for the design and implementation of qualitative research. Emphasis is given to issues of generalizability and credibility in qualitative research, as well as the ethical issues in qualitative research.
Course emphasis is on implementation of qualitative research. The course provides practical training under the supervision of withdrawal of project (design, development of research questions, selection and recruitment of participants), data collection (interviewing, document or observational studies), and analysis of different types of qualitative data.
The course introduces three types of qualitative analysis approaches that are often used in qualitative research: thematic analysis / qualitative content analysis, interpretive phenomenology and discursive psychology. The course's final part, participants will choose one of the approaches to be explored further.

An introduction to multilevel analysis: an epidemiological perspective (3 ECTS)
Period: Fall semester 2012
Registration: June 2012
Lecturers: Associate professor Nawi Ng (course coordinator), Associate professor Miguel San Sebastián (course coordinator), Joacim Rocklöv
Course homepage: TBA
Over the past few years, interest in the use of multilevel analysis to investigate public health problems has grown. This growth has been mainly stimulated by a resurgence of interest in the potential ecological or group-level determinants of health and the notion that variables referring to groups or to how individuals are related to each other within groups may be relevant to understanding the distribution of health outcomes.
This course is designed as an on-line, hands-on learning experience that will foster the development of basic skills in multilevel analysis with a focus on fundamental epidemiological concepts and interpretations rather than statistical or mathematical formulae. It starts with a description of why multilevel models are necessary if the data have a hierarchical structure. It then covers the basic theory of two level models (intercept and random slopes) with emphasis on modeling strategies. Next it explains how multilevel models can be applied to analyze data when the outcome is continuous (linear regression) and when the outcome is dichotomous (logistic regression). Further topics include defining area-level variables and sample size calculation.

Aktuella utlysningar |
